Devon Rodriguez was taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center for a psychological evaluation pending transfer to the Passaic County Jail following the incident on Linden Street near Broadway, responders said.

His mother was treated at St. Mary's General Hospital in Passaic and released with a minor stab wound, they said.

A sergeant and two officers responded to an 8 a.m. call Monday at the Linden Street garden apartment for "an emotionally disturbed person that is out of control and breaking items in the house," according to a police report.

They found his mother with a small stab wound from a pocket knife, the apartment ransacked and Rodriguez locked in a bathroom, refusing to come out, it says.

Officers got her and Rodriguez's stepfather out of the apartment and summoned an ambulance, according to the report.

Members of the police Emergency Response Team arrived and helped the officers convince Rodriguez to come out of the bathroom, it says.

Police reported finding three knives in Rodriguez's waistband during a subsequent search.

They charged him with aggravated assault and multiple weapons offenses, among other counts, Passaic County sheriff's records show.

City police, firefighters and the police Emergency Response Team responded along with EMS units.
